Drawing from nearly a decade of experience providing professional headshots for companies in Akron, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown, allow me to share some insight on how to dress for success for professional headshots and make that first impression count.
I recommend using the K.I.S.S method (Keep It Super Simple) when planning your wardrobe for professional headshots.
A great headshot is all about expression and should always focus attention on the face. While clothing can give a glimpse into your personality, I see far too many headshots where the clothing dominates the photo.
For business headshots, I suggest wearing solid, neutral tones (whites, tans, grays, blacks). These colors won’t distract the viewer.
If you want to add a pop of color, layer a neutral jacket over a colored shirt, or opt for a colorful tie (Double Windsor, of course).
Regardless of your passion for fashion, avoid wearing bold patterns, horizontal stripes, and super-bright colors, as these options will make the image less about you and more about what you’re wearing.
Your professional headshot isn’t for you, it’s to help potential clients put trust in your brand. It’s what people will see most often on LinkedIn, social media, and in your email signature… Coming off as confident & approachable instead of loud & overbearing is usually good practice.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to show off your fashion sense when you land that meeting in person.
Keep these tips in mind when planning your wardrobe for your professional headshot session.
I wish you much success! I’ll see you in the studio.
